MTV World Stage in Malaysia

When they first announced that there was gonna be a Malaysian instalment of MTV World Stage, I was like, cool. Then they announced the line up, then I was like, meh. It's either people I don't know AND people I don't really care for anyway. Hmm. If nothing else, I haven't been back to Sunway Lagoon in over a decade...

But because it's an MTV thing where the passes/tickets are typically not for sale and it was easier for me to get these (with Celcom as an event sponsor) than for the Asia Awards not that long ago, I decided why not. And by easier, I meant all it took was a RM50 reload and some texting and redemption at certain ticket outlets in the Klang Valley.

For weeks I couldn't think of (and find) anyone who would want the spare ticket. Even the people whom I knew were fans can't make it for various reasons I don't care to repeat. Eventually I gave it to this girl who's also a fellow Coldplay fan and had mostly corresponded via Twitter.

The kanasai part of it was the ticket redemption was from 3 p.m. onwards in the sweltering August heat and they were letting people in to the Surf Beach at the time. (They had the no re-entry BS even when they stamped you - WTF). I decided to kill time in the mall after collecting mine instead of hanging round there like a total idiot. I only finally went in just before the recording started. They gave us a handheld fan and a rain poncho in a zip lock bag (as it was drizzling on and off) at the door. There were bag checks, but they don't check pockets, which was where I had stashed the new camera. For what it was worth, I think I took some great close up shots from about 20 feet away. But I had never recorded any video cos I can't be bothered.

If there was supposed to be 15,000 people, then I think they were just BS-ing us cos it's about 1/3 of that number at the time. By the time it was dark, there were scattered used ponchos everywhere as well as various debris. If nothing else, there were plenty of port-a-johns around, but as a rule I never use the public toilets if I can help it. I also saw at least one case of fainting there from the heat and from the crowds. I was one of the ones who were settled nicely behind watching everyone else squeeze and mosh in front. Sign that I'm getting old. Hmm.

As expected, food and drink were overpriced: RM5 for canned drinks and bottled water, food was at least RM5 for like, KFC snacks and the Hut 'zzas (RM10 for a personal pan). I daren't check out the rest of the options.

What I probably should've done after getting the tickets was to go home, take a nap and come back after dinner when the headlining acts actually DID show up. I sat through most of the newer acts and some of Hoobastank before I finally called it a night and left. (No, I didn't stick around for Kasabian) around 9 something.

As I was leaving, I was listening to strains of that annoying song of theirs, The Reason. Urgh. I took the first feeder bus out and was home around 10 something. I was so exhausted I only had enough energy to take a nice shower and watch The Tonight Show. If nothing else, I can cross out the "go to an MTV event" off my Life List.
