Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang

Nanny mcphee and the big bang ver2

Caught Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang for the heck of it, and I am a sucker for British films. I  wanted to watch it earlier in the day, but as the 'rents coming back mid-afternoon, it would be a tight squeeze; but I squeezed in an errand all the same before going back to the airport anyway.

In terms of the plot, it's similar to the first movie, just that in this one it's a harried mum who has too much on her plate with 5 boisterous children on a country farm during the second World War with the husband off to war. There's also her brother in law Phil, who wants her to sell her husband's half of the farm to pay his gambling debts.

It has been awhile since I've seen the first movie, so the fuzzy moments are all I have to work on.It is funny, I give you that - I laughed through most of it.

Things you can't miss:
  • CGI piglets flying, and then doing a synchronised swimming routine
  • The belching bird, Mr Edelweiss
  • CGI baby elephant :D
  • Dame Maggie Smith sitting on cow poo.
Random thoughts:
  • Evil uncle angle was extraneous, IMO. But a villain is necessary, I suppose.
  • What is with the Gyllenhaal siblings and English accents? I can't say whether I believe her accent or not because I know she's American, but I suppose it's passable.
  • I thought it was a little funny seeing Ralph Fiennes's character in the wide shot - made me think he looked a little like Hitler :P
  • Didn't recognise Ewan McGregor as Mr Green until the end, where clean-shaven Ewan McGregor comes into the frame - I like clean shaven McGregor better :P
  • I love the slight twist in the end where Dame Maggie Smith's character, Mrs Dockherty, is baby Aggie from the first movie - I don't think she was ever referred to by her first name up to then - the rattle proves it.
  • Man, Nanny McPhee is IMMORTAL leh - living through 2 centuries liddat...
  • Still can't quite figure how the Big Bang part of the title works in the actual film.
All in all, I liked the movie.
