According to this Malay Mail article, they're running low on 10-digit (3 + 7) mobile phone numbers and the 11-digit (3 + 8) numbers will be available middle of next month.
I can't believe it took 20 years for this to happen, I thought it would've happened sooner since most people have more than one mobile phone number at any given point in time, and not forgetting the disposed numbers over the years.
I just hope there won't be too many hiccups if the 11 digit numbers are gonna have to live together with the 10 digit phone numbers. I remember the transition when fixed line numbers in the Valley had to go one digit extra from seven to eight digits - it wasn't a terrible transition for me personally because I was still in school, but there was a time when everyone was asking everyone else what their "new" phone number was even though the placement of the extra digit wasn't that hard, I thought.
Now that I'm a little older and if I were to have an 11-digit phone number, I would hesitate a little. It'd be like writing cheques in the new year and you still write the previous year out of habit.
I guess it's a good thing that the mobile prefixes are no longer just attached to any one telco since you can change providers without changing phone numbers. The 011 prefix is supposed to be for all the local telcos.
All that aside, the one thing I know for sure is that Chinese people would never get a phone number with the 014 prefix if they can help it.
