Facebook wedding invitations - yay or nay?

Does anyone still receive actual wedding invitations in the mail anymore?

Way back when, it wasn't unusual for people (or their parents) to actually go house to house to deliver their (kid's) wedding invitations, especially if it's relatives living nearby or neighbours (duh). Faraway relatives? Postal service.

Now people are cutting out the middlemen (or basically, the postman) and in an effort to "be green" (or save some money, take your pick) by doing the inviting on Facebook.

I've been poking around etiquette sites and other articles about this, and they mostly say it's fine when it comes to engagement announcements and "save the dates", but not the actual invitation, which I agree for the most part. Are they trying to put the card making people out of business? The etiquette mavens (Miss Manners, Emily Post, etc) still don't have much on etiquette in the modern age, but Slate is trying with their Manners for the Digital Age podcast.

Besides, not everyone is on Facebook, especially if it's your first cousin twice removed and your elderly, non tech-savvy relatives - you still need to send them a proper invitation card.

If you want me to show up with a decent gift/angpow (for the Chinese wedding), the least you could do is to give me a proper invitation card - getting a bunch of people in one place to distribute the cards is still okay. Putting out feelers on Facebook to gauge how many people are available to attend is still not too bad, but getting tagged in an uploaded picture of your invitation on Facebook is NOT OKAY!!! You're just giving people a very good reason to untag themselves and save themselves the time and money by not attending, where you'll still need to follow up with them by other means anyway. Talk about insincere. Setting up a Facebook event page is still acceptable if you follow up with invitees afterwards.

It's only a matter of time before these same people will upload pictures of their wedding, where the rest of us are free to look through without having to be there in person :P
