Preamble ramble: Paid to watch this. As it's Wednesday, not too much. This time I opted to try GSC's online payment via Public Bank internet banking. Convenience fee? RM0.50 per ticket. Not too bad I guess - you either print out your own ticket (where the QR code is scanned when you go in) or you just recite the reservation number at the Gold Class/Ticket reservation counter and have them print out your normal ticket stub. Whatever floats your boat.
It is this decade's movie version of Alexandre Dumas's The Three Musketeers; the big budget, European version anyway. And by that I mean that the cast is mostly European. The only people I recognised were Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Mads Mikkelsen and Christoph Waltz. Well, it can't be any worse than the 1993 American one...
Won't go on about the plot - if you've read the book (or read the Wikipedia article), you're all set. Does it count if I read the little square, pocket-sized ones with illustrations on every other page (anyone remembers those?) when I was in primary school?
Anyhow, here's the two-minute trailer...

I liked that they got the basic gist of the book, but they added their own twist to it. I also thought the action and fight sequences were pretty bad ass.
- Orlando Bloom as the Duke of Buckingham is gay-er looking here than he ever did in the Pirates movies. Really. But at least he gets to be an Englishman in this one.
- Christoph Waltz, Mads Mikkelsen and the baddie typecast (as Cardinal Richelieu and Rochefort respectively).
- The final battle between D'Artagnan and Rochefort was painful to watch.
- When I first saw the cinematic trailer, I didn't quite understand how Milla Jovovich fit into this movie as Milady de Winter. Then I saw what her character had to do in this movie and I remembered that she's married to the director. Ho-kay then. People who've seen the Resident Evil movies (not me) might like that.
- How is it that until the D'Artagnan-Rochefort final battle that everyone who's died by the sword in this movie does not shed blood?
One of the things that cheesed me off (and I can't be the only one) is the accents. Okay, the story is set in France. Most of the characters are supposed to be French. WHAT THE FISH is everyone in this movie speaking with an English accent?!
The ending also suggests a sequel... hmm. Will there be one, I don't know - but Dumas wrote a followup to this, so...

All that said - As an action movie: a fun romp. Liked it. Go watch it if you can, but don't think about it too much (like yours truly).
