Dune is one of those things I've always ever heard about in the pop culture, but have never bothered to go into it myself because it seemed intimidating AF. So can't say I'm a book fan going into this.
Mostly to escape the midday heat, I went for an afternoon screening at the Jaya TGV, where it was just me and erm, 4 other people. I know. Despite being in my seat by about 5, 10 minutes after the start time, I still sat through at least 15 more minutes of ads and trailers, particularly a super long F9 one. By the time I got out of the movie, it was raining heavily outside.
- Yeah, the Mandarin kinda checks out... sorta. Have to like how Paul and the doctor speak Mandarin to each other (so the mother dunno what they're saying?), and also it's Chang Chen.
- It's kinda cool that the household use sign language for covert communication, I guess?
- Wait, so that floating thing in space is like a space SMART Tunnel ah?
- I can't hear half the things they said over the damn score/sound design. The only way I knew was the subtitles would flash something on screen out of nowhere.
- Jason Momoa gonna Jason Momoa, I guess. But after all the ancient world-y ass names, to suddenly hear a name like Duncan Idaho was like "Ehh??"
- Have to love that Jessica still had the presence of mind to chide Paul about the way he used his Voice even as things are going sideways for them.
- I also dunno what it says about Paul when his own mother can outrun him in the desert...
- Is it just me, or the copters look like dragon flies?
- Yeah Leto, why DIDN'T you marry Jessica?
- Erm, wasn't expecting a nekkid Leto there. But seriously, WTF - stripping him of his clothes when he's down, that's low.
- Lady Jessica in the copter, flying through the sandstorm is like every parent in the passenger seat of the car their newly licensed kid is driving LOL
You can really feel the runtime (2 hours 35 minutes), especially in bladder afterwards (managed to not use the bathroom during the movie, yay). I'm also kinda glad that there's isn't a stinger, cos I don't think I can sit through another 15 minutes after all that movie.
It was okay lah, I guess, but I dunno if there's even gonna be a Part 2, so...
