Weekend of Iliza

When you hear comics tour Asia and are swinging by South East Asia, about 90% of the time they'll only stop in Singapore. Every time this happens, it's a gamble for me because I could buy a ticket for the Singapore show and later hear an announcement about the KL show and then scramble to sell or burn the paid ticket. Or start making arrangements to travel down.

I've been a fan ever since she was on Last Comic Standing way back when and won her season.

I had already bought a early (?) ticket to see Iliza Shlesinger in Singapore (cos I'm kiasu like that) when the local promoter announced a show in KL days or weeks later. I could've skipped the KL show at this point, but I did cos, early bird promo. So I thought I might as well make a trip (to Singapore) out of it, albeit a less than 30 hour trip.

Here's how it went down...

Saturday night at The Capitol Theatre
Saturday - Capitol Theatre, Singapore: Walked past her and her husband Smoky Husky (if you read the People magazine story about their wedding...) in the sad mall that is Capitol Piazza downstairs before the show after getting my own dinner at the not crowded Food Republic (was too lazy to walk over to Raffles City and didn't have too much time to dither because they decided to have the NDP rehearsals right outside). I hate food courts as a lone diner, but the other options weren't as appealing.

Her hour-long set was (mostly) about her recent nuptials and the weird American wedding traditions she refused to do as a (well known) feminist paying for her own wedding, among which are wearing a garter, donning the veil, and bachelorette party at a bar. The only crowd work she did was telling off a guy in the front row for being on his phone.

As one white guy behind me loudly exclaimed to his friends while in line for the audience meet and greet after the show, she didn't repeat anything, except maybe the end (which was on Corden apparently, to which I'm like, "wah lau, obssess much?"). Which kinda leads me to believe that she's workshopping material for her next special...?

I normally don't do picture taking, because no one is gonna look at those. But I did tell her that I flew in just for the show and that I'll be at the KL show the next night.

Was mostly staring the back of this white head
Sunday - The Platform, TTDI: Got there just as the doors opened and collected my printed ticket from the counter. I don't know who messed up, but was moved one row up because I ended up being in someone's seat...? (I was where it said to sit on the ticket, so it's their fault) And most of my view is that of a white guy's shaved head. The playlist while we waited is pretty much music I grew up on (to be fair, she's only a year older, so...) - boybands and erm, t.A.T.u. Found out that a friend was gonna be at the show but was seated in the balcony, so we chatted over FB messenger while waiting for the show to start.

This time I got to sit back, sit quietly and not have to react much to the set. Also helps that I'm sitting in the dark as well.

Her crowd work this time was to point out this guy who made the mistake of walking out (presumably to use the bathroom) right in front of her (cos he was in the front row) in the middle of the show but skulked back in, afraid of being made fun of again (which she did).

I thought the set was funny and thought provoking, even after hearing it twice over two nights.

No opening act for both shows, which was probably why she did the audience meet and greets after the shows. Didn't have a picture taken, but I did get her to sign my ticket (which several others have done).

PS. She found out that she doesn't hate durian, so she brought some freeze dried durian back to the States and has been getting friends and family to try and posting reactions on IG.
