First comedy show of the year for me.
You can't make diamonds without pressure, so come and see how Kavin Jay turns two years of lockdown, a total loss of income, and a global pandemic into two nights of absolute hilarity!"KAVIN JAY: I am sorry I SHOUTED" will see Kavin explore his relationship with family and how past experiences give him hope for a better tomorrow.Oh, there will also be jokes about angry Indian people.
Paid full price for the ticket because the promo code (kena saboh) didn't work when I bought it and I have to deal with that. Le sigh. It was only when I was printing the ticket (old school, yes) that I noticed that the show was at 8 p.m. Even with that start time, the show only started around 8.20 p.m.(?), so I dunno if that experiment worked out for them in getting people to show up on time, let alone early.
I'm guessing no one would be too enthused about leaving the house to only watch an hour long set from one person, which might explain why got two opening acts? There might not be a host, but I still laughed like a loon when I heard Papi Zak's voice as the (unseen) announcer, because OF COURSE.
FWIW, I always enjoyed Riezman's comedy, even if the club material can be kinda puerile because he's so young. At least he's got a 10 minute set that I've not heard some version of recently. But him talking about his love of pork and trying to hide it from the family is hilariously haram.
Raqib's 10 minute set was familiar to me (mostly him sharing the bitingly hilarious rejected punny headlines as a former Star copywriter), but I'm not complaining.
After all that, Kavin finally came on and did about an hour long set, which was pandemic-themed but meandered on the fertility issues he's had before his only kid came into the world. There's also a lot of other things in between, but those were the major takeaways. If you've seen him perform enough times, you would know that he's also a crowd work guy so he also addressed some people in the first few rows to talk to/make fun of if possible, which kinda fell flat tonight cos the people in front were too noble for him to make fun of without coming off as a dick, LOL
I suppose the only good thing about the early start time was that I was able to be home by 11 p.m.?
