Didn't know about this movie (Three Thousand Years of Longing) until I saw the trailer before Thor: Love and Thunder in Singapore. I don't think anyone knew about this movie; or if anyone was actively marketing it... Idris Elba might've mentioned it really briefly on some talk show at some point (while promoting his other movie Beast) before they all went on summer break, but yeah.
I hadn't realised that it came out on the 1st and screenings are getting fewer and further (probably 2 or 3 a day now) as I'm guessing the theaterical run is coming to an end? Only settled on watching it at Jaya because I would rather watch it at 11.15 a.m. and pay RM12 for it as opposed to RM23 for an afternoon screening elsewhere, say Pyramid. It was just me and erm, 4 other people sat spread out across the room.
Dr Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton) is an academic - content with life and a creature of reason. While in Istanbul attending a conference, she happens to encounter a Djinn (Idris Elba) who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. This presents two problems. First, she doubts that he is real and second, because she is a scholar of story and mythology, she knows all the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong. The Djinn pleads his case by telling her fantastical stories of his past. Eventually she is beguiled and makes a wish that surprises them both.
- I hadn't realised that narratology is an actual field of study. Well, blow me down. I dunno if there'll ever come a time there's gonna be YouTube videos titled "Narratologist Breaks Down Narratology Scenes in TV and Movies" or some version of it.
- I didn't know there was gonna be quite so much onscreen sex in this movie (going by the Parents' Guide on the IMDb page), which was only made obvious because of the censorship jump-cuts.
- I've made it this far in life only to realise that this is probably the first George Miller movie I've ever seen? (Can't remember if I've seen Babe: Pig in the City)
