Back when I was still bored enough to go check out the weekly comedy open mics, I've seen Tuck trying his stuff out.
So when it was announced that he was gonna mount a special (to celebrate 10 years of doing comedy), NGL, I was like, "he got an hour's worth of material meh?". And in PJPAC, of all places. Morbid curiousity was why I got a ticket. That, and there was a promo code so I wasn't paying full price anyway. Dunno how the first night (Thursday) tickets were not available when I was looking to buy; which was just as well I could only make it on Friday night.
Anyway, got myself there, got a weird tasting RTD milk tea (there wasn't any regular Coke to be had in the supermarket downstairs) before heading up to PJPAC. There were quite a few people in attendance, which I came to find out later mostly consisted of:
- Friends (especially Uncle Sim's wife's friends, it seems like)
- Family members (Tuck's, at least), his girlfriend and her colleagues, and..
- his students (he's a lecturer by day), who got comped to attend the show. I would rather have the extra credit if I was them, but that might be unethical.
And because they're also kinda tight, Uncle Sim (Tong) was the opening act and did (I wanna say) 15, 20 minutes? Most of it was filthy/intimate (at Tuck's request, he claims) - his wife (and kid) material was kinda roast-y... and she was in the audience, with her friends (presumably), hearing about the mundane but kinda intimate details of their marriage on stage. It was pretty funny, even if I had some version of the bits before.
After all that, it was finally Tuck's turn. Him treating his set like one of his classes was an interesting choice (he was telling the class the outline, and how much material he's got left, etc), or it could be because some of his students were in attendance. I dunno. The material's amusing, I gotta give him that. I give props to anyone who can talk about their sex life on stage in front of their partners and family members. He said so himself that he probably has about 30 minutes of material.. which makes more sense.
It was a good attempt, if nothing else.
