First comedy show of the year.
Bought a ticket in the nosebleeds pretty last minute (like, night before last minute) once I found out the first date (apparently it was so laku they added another date hor) still had nosebleed seating available, which was still pretty expensive at RM272 after the booking and ticketing fees, the latter seemed like BS because people were downloading it to their phones or are printing it out for themselves. From stadiums to like Plenary Hall in KL Convention Centre. Not sure if it's a upscale, downscale or lateral move. Ticket prices say it's a move up for him, cos the most expensive tickets were over RM900, but it could also be plain inflation. Yeah, not paying that much to get crowd worked on.
Despite leaving home a little later (8 p.m.?), it still took me about 45 minutes to get there, which is better than being stuck in traffic for an hour at least had I left earlier. I thought I could just waltz in, but apparently there was still quite a line at the bag check and ticket verification downstairs. By the time I made it to the upstairs bag check, those guys were chomping at the bit to shine their flashlights in some bags cos they so bored. Stashed my bottle in the dry bag, but was still asked about it (just said it was a bag) before letting me through.
There was food, snacks and drinks for sale in the lobby, but I was more amazed that they were still there as people were leaving after the show. Still glad I had dinner at home. Think there might've been a storage/coat check fee for people with anything bigger than a handbag (backpacks) which I saw a line for going in and out.
There was so much security around (presumably to scare anyone out of trying to record the show?), I didn't dare to take a sip of my water. There's also plenty of notice around telling people no recording of any kind. I don't blame them - some of the stuff said are kinda cancellable if it got out and taken out of context.
As it is with Russell Peters's shows, there's a DJ (Starting from Scratch) and opening act (Vishnu Vaka). Wasn't in the seat that long before Vishnu did his set, which I'm not gonna hate on; dude was wearing his own merch on stage.
Russell came on right after and did about 75 minutes? At least a third of it was crowd work - he found the white guy in the front row who was there with his younger Asian wife (jackpot for crowd work comics), other married couples and a couple guys later on.
Bulk of the set is him ranting about millennials and Gen Z. Because I don't follow him on soc med or seen his more recent specials (if there was any), I didn't know he has a son (albeit 4 year old) and remarried recently.
Show ended before 10.30 p.m., which is plenty of time to catch the train if that's how you got there, but yeah.
It was okay, but not enough to want to spend any more than I did.
