Personally I have never thought of the song as such, especially not when I'm older and (slightly) wiser. I would have to say that it's utopian at best. As a favourite song of mine, I take offence at that. I've not seen the video for ages, and the only frames that I do recall in my mind is John staring at the camera, saying the lines and playing the piano - round yellow glasses, bushy brows and all.
I guess the only people that would find it depressing are people who believe in heaven and hell, case in point the very first few lines of the song...
"Imagine there's no heaven,
it's easy if you try....
No hell below us,
above us only sky..."
and a little later in the song...,
" Nothing to kill or die for,Go figure.
...and no religion too..."
