One piece of news that jumped out at me this week was the price increase of fresh, raw garlic (from RM3.50 to RM8.50 per kilo allegedly), and my first thought was...
DAMNIT WHY COULDN'T IT BE ONIONS?!
Some people who know me in real life may or may not remember that I hate onions, but with a caveat: While I don't mind the use of onions in cooking, but if I see any onion on my plate, I will pick them off. I even hate spring onions and fried onions.
That said, if the price of garlic has gone up, so would the price of char kuey teow, and other dishes that require more than a few cloves of garlic, like garlic bread and bak kut teh... Damn, some more it's hard to find decent char kuey teow in PJ that's under RM4, but now... sigh.
Isn't fresh still cheaper than pre-chopped garlic in a jar? (Not that I've seen any in Malaysia, but as I'm not the one that does the grocery shopping, so it's not for me to say).
Not having garlic is also a reason why I can't be a vegetarian - there are some that don't eat garlic and onions for some reason that eludes me.
Anyway, here's hoping it doesn't last too long.. a life with no garlic is a life not worth living.
