May Day at Crackhouse Comedy Club, KL

Heard about this brand new local comedy club, the Crackhouse Comedy Club, on BFM (or rather, podcast after the fact). It's probably the only space in town that one can safely call a comedy club because a lot of the existing comedy events in town are in clubs and theatre space, but not in an actual comedy club.

Figured because it was May Day/Labour Day and all that, so I went to the first (paying) night at the Crackhouse with a couple of friends who were also game enough to join me. There was a number to text/call for tickets, so luckily I didn't have to make a phone call :P

Got to that part of Taman Tun around 7 p.m., went for the first parking spot we found, and literally walked around the block to find it (and also dinner). It would've been nice if they mentioned where along the road it was (because the lot numbers were gone or obfuscated), but I will save you people the trouble - it's above Deutsches Gasthaus, but before Hong Leong Bank. You're welcome.

By the time we were done with dinner at Mukha (though now regretting not getting the chocolate mousse pie from Souka), it was already five past 8 p.m. and had to find the place all over again. Luckily Jonathan Atherton was taking a smoke downstairs and pointed us the right way (which was weird, considering we hadn't explicitly mentioned Crackhouse while looking for it, but grateful all the same).

We were so early that we could pretty much pick where we wanted to sit. Went with a table towards the back. We were waiting so long that had I gone by myself, I would be bored stupid. Much as I get why the room had to be pretty dark, but because this is Malaysia, there were also mosquitoes to deal with, which I would not have noticed if one of the companions (whose blood mosquitoes go for, for some reason) hadn't mentioned it.

Lights started to go down around 9 p.m. Lineup for the night was (if you don't count the resident "crackheads"/co-owners Jonathan Atherton, Rizal van Geyzel) Raghav Mandava, Papa CJ (whom I remembered from Last Comic Standing back in the day), and Butch Bradley. Glad not to be sitting so close to the stage because of the audience interaction bit. I'm not a sadist.

The night's lineup was mostly hilarious (pretty much heard most of Atherton's audience fluffing stuff from last year's Kings and Queens of Comedy), even if half of them were stoned/high after last night's opening. For RM35 each, it was okay lah. Show ended around 11.30 p.m.
