Knives Out

When I first heard the title Knives Out, the Radiohead song came to mind. (I cannot be the only one that thought of this.) It was also annoying trying to find a screening time that's not after 9 p.m. on a weeknight (cos it's about 2 hours long) and also not pay 2 digits for a ticket - ended up watching this at Jaya's TGV on Monday night. I was more annoyed that Jaya's flat rate parking is now RM3.20. WTFBBQ.

I admit, I skimmed the Wikipedia article but only to find out who so that I could see the crumbs the movie sprinkles out along the way.

If you read a lot of Agatha Christie, the plot might feel a little familiar, with Daniel Craig playing a Poirot-esque character (crazy accent not his own, minus the stupid 'tache) as he tries to solve the case at hand. When you watch a movie like this, just about everything is either a clue or a form of foreshadowing.
  • I didn't know Riki Lindhome (of Garfunkel and Oates) was gonna be in this movie.
  • Oklah, whoda thunk that the great grandma was such an asset? LOL.
  • Is is just me, or is Linda supposed to be a Trump stand-in? A real estate tycoon who got a $1 million loan from their father? Really?
  • But seriously, when is Ransom an actual name? Okaylah, if one of my names was Ransom, I would go by that also. Way more badass than "Hugh", anyhow.
  • When Ransom mentioned that "only the help" address him by his first name, you need to tuck that piece of information someplace.
  • I also didn't think Plummer was gonna be in the movie as much as he was. But I suppose he has to be.
  • Toni Collette's character was a hoot - as a Goop-eque wellness "influencer".
  • Oklah, you can't get post-Avengers Chris Evans in your movie to NOT play a bad guy. No wonder he said yes. Just saying. Also, apparently replicas of the cable knit sweater he was wearing in this movie sold out, haha.
  • Joseph-Gordon Levitt is somewhere in this movie.
  • Whoda thought Frank Oz was gonna be in this?!
  • You have to applaud's Marta's growing sense of empowerment once she got used to the fact that she's the sole beneficiary of the family fortune. Also, I don't think we ever found out if she was a US citizen or not.
  • Of course the letter he wrote Linda had to be written in invisible ink - why would you stuff the envelope with an empty piece of paper otherwise?
As a whodunit, I thought it was okay and kinda funny. My guess as to why the movie critics thought it was a fun movie was because it wasn't a franchise movie or anything based on existing IP. I don't know if it'll do well enough for more Benoit Blanc movies.
