What a Load of Jit (JitFest 2025)

Got a cheap(ish) seat (not the balcony) to this just days before, so that's not too bad.

Got to 1U a little early, intending to have dinner before the show, but apparently even McDonald's is not fast enough. So I ended up making it there a little past 8 p.m., and of course the show only started around 8.20 p.m.?

Other people in attendance are basically the who's who of Malaysian/KL celebs and theatre scene, who also all seemed to know each other. I recognised a bunch of people, others I was like, daammmnnn (you know who you are). As one of the randos in attendance, it was interesting to watch.

Show kicked off with a prepared address by Jo Kukathas (who was supposedly out sick with dengue, but had been there all along?), before both Zahim Albakri and Ida Nerina came on to welcome everyone and what not. The rest of the night was basically going through Jit's life story and work, with people who've known him coming on to tell their stories about him. Too many people to name and list.

There's also excerpt readings of his plays.

First half alone was already over 2 hours long; I finally decided to use the restroom when they were going on about the songwriting process for The Storyteller (or something), and then intermission happened. To be fair, a lot of other people also had to get up to use the facilities the whole time.

Second half was about his comedy work. Harith said his peace (piece?) about Jit, and then Actorlympics (with Rashid Salleh and Dato' Afdlin Shauki) briefly reunited for an improv game, the "Whose Line" game (if you're a fan of the TV show, it's the one where the performers have inserted lines taken from a bucket and use them in the scene when (in) appropriate), but with lines from Jit's work. Second half also took at least an hour or two.

It was nice to see Renee Choy (albeit on a screen) again, all these years later. Joanne Kam coming on as Madam Kam, the shampoo sifu was kinda funny.

Of course, they also teased upcoming events happening throughout the year.

I imagine what it must be like being at the Oscars when it's gone on a tad too long.

It was well past midnight when I finally got home.
