Gavin Yap: Fork It - One Man's Journey Through Food and Memories

Did not manage to catch the earlier run of this show (which if memory serves, was a workshop version?), so when this run was announced, I got a ticket for the Saturday night show because I'm not insane enough to brave the Thursday and Friday night traffic. This also gave me an excuse to check out Bobo KL, a place I've not been to before (I know!).

It's also been AGES since I last saw Gavin perform on stage, so die die had to go (#iykyk).

Got a ticket on Cloudjoi, and someone reached out to me via WhatsApp about seating arrangements day of. They even asked me if I wanted to preorder nasi lemak (chose not to). Going by myself would mean sharing a table, so ok lah.

Got there a little earlier to get parking and have dinner at Super Saigon a few doors down. Then I made my way over, and I had no idea it was quite the climb up the stairs, but I was wearing sneakers not heels. I had no idea we're basically in the attic of the building.. (can see the rafters)

There was old school candy (that you would know from childhood) on all the tables, but I held off on having them. I almost lost my shit when the staff told Joanne Kam that we'd be sharing the table (she was also by herself). She thinks I dunno who she is, but I didn't really want to impose, and I'm just some rando at the same table to her, so we both just looked at our phones to pass the time. I also had nothing to say, really, so ya lah..

It was interesting to hear what's going on around me while pretending to be disinterested. Apparently some people travelled from Singapore for this? Okay...

Some Italian soda; wasn't about to spend RM12 on Coke
Following a hugely successful workshop performance, Gavin returns to BoboKL with the fully polished version of his one-man show; a journey through his most vivid memories—all inspired by food. A nimble actor, Gavin poignantly portrays a range of characters, bringing humour, nostalgia, and raw emotion to the stage.

Forgot there was intermission, which was time for them to bring out the nasi lemak people have preordered. For RM9, it had better be the best nasi lemak ever. Maybe next time. But it was interesting overhearing Joanne Kam's convos as I made dunno and catch up on the Shopee games. And we both finally had some of the candy on the table at some point.

First of all, I had no idea dude had so many voices in his arsenal, but I can't say that I'm surprised. FWIW, I enjoyed the journey he took us on.

The show works better in that intimate setting compared to a proper theatre, IMO.

Now, as I type this out, I just realised that I could've taken the chance to ask him to sign my copy of his book, LOL. Oh wells.
