Mother Mary

Second A24 movie in two days, this time at the 1U TGV because you know why. It was me and probably 5 other people watching it at the time.

I dunno why we got this movie before the wide release date, but hokay...

20 minutes of ads and trailers before the movie started properly at 11 a.m., give or take.

While I'm glad it's under 2 hours, but at 1 hour 50 minutes, it still feels too long.
Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer, Sam Anselm, on the eve of her comeback performance.

It's just the two of them trauma dumping unto each other after a terrible falling out and estrangement when Mary asks Sam for a final look.

On one hand, I thought this would be better as a play cos it's mostly a two-hander piece in a single location, but with the other stuff going on, I get why this had to be an actual movie.

  • They were not joking when they said they watched a lot of other pop stars' concerts, etc, but for the most part, I felt that there was a lot more Gaga than anyone else?
  • So THAT'S Mrs Chris Evans..
  • Now that you know the final look is an Iris van Herpen (credited at the end of the movie), it's hard to unsee the influence everywhere else...
There's some nice looks in this movie, but I'm not sure if I appreciated the veer into goth horror halfway through.
