Ah Long Pte Ltd

Disclaimer: if you're not from or familiar with either Malaysia or Singapore, please don't bother continuing to read this as I can't be arsed to explain the intricacies.

So I finally saw Ah Long Pte Ltd after some doubts, and... I thought it's fricking hilarious.

Look it up on Wikipedia for the plot, but the ending is given away there.

One of the subplots is tomboyish gang leader Hua (played by Fann Wong) marries an effeminate dance instructor-choreographer/stylist JoJo (played to perfection by Mark Lee) just to appease her nagging mother (Lai Meng). Yes, they finally connected as a married couple, but I won't say how they got there.

I have a niggling thought: I don't understand how the mother can nag more about her not getting married than her gang activities. Does she NOT know that her daughter's a gang leader? Yes, I know it's only a movie, but I don't let these things slide so easily ok?

Some of the other reviewers have complained about director Jack Neo's stealing bits from other movies like Shaolin Soccer and the My Wife is a Gangster series (which you can't miss, by the way). As Rhett Butler (in movie, not book) would say, "Frankly my dear, I don't GIVE a damn". Hello... Scorsese's Oscar winning movie The Departed is the angmo version of the Infernal Affairs series... I rest my case.

I don't know how they got away with shooting like half the movie in Malaysia and Malaysians not knowing anything about it. Well okay, maybe it's just me... but still, Jalan Imbi?! (or somewhere in the area, because you can spot the Berjaya Times Square Hotel in the background).

The songs are not really memorable per se, but they're pretty hilarious nonetheless; especially the Ah Long anthem sung by a Pavarotti spoof-a-like, which brings tears in not just the gang members, but also the extras in the scene.

The product placement in the movie's also pretty blatant - even if you didn't stick around to read the end credits, you have an idea who the sponsors are.

I thought it's pretty funny for the most part. Unless you're gonna spend the next 2 hours reading the subtitles, then don't waste the money.

Oh, and don't forget to stick around for what happens after the initial ending. Until all the lights come on, do NOT leave the cinema.
