If you've not been on Facebook (FB) lately (HOW CAN?!), you might not have heard that FB is now letting users choose their own Facebook user URL as of last Saturday. Yeah, I know it's been a week already, so sue me.
The only reason why the tech news outlets is making a lot of hoo-ha about it is for the potential "landrush" (the word keeps popping up with regards to this story) that people with common names have to go through to make sure they got facebook.com/johnsmith and not facebook.com/johnsmith1432 or something like that.
According to them, you can pick out your URL from midnight on Saturday, June 13 in your own timezone (depends). I was still up that time and I reloaded my main page a couple of times, and nothing (this was before I heard about the facebook.com/username alternative). Decided to sleep on it and when I logged on again when I woke up, I finally got the prompt to choose my own.
FB gives you 6 choices of usernames with differing punctuation or lackthereof, and a blank space for you to type in your own.
Long story short, I decided to go with my actual name for my FB URL. I could've gone either way as my name is not THAT common anyway
To prevent "face-squatting", it's only one per login email and you can only get to pick it once. You can't change once you've decided. Good thing, I guess.
If you've still not gotten your vanity URL - WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
