Tales from the Bedroom

Bought tickets a couple weeks ago to see Tales from the Bedroom playing at indicine in KLPac, playing the Double Valentine weekend; but due to some miscommunication, the other person had to drop out and I had a last minute replacement for the other ticket.

On the drive into KLPac itself, we saw this poor schmuck running in the dark towards KLPac and we had a hitchhiker for all of a few minutes. By the time we got upstairs, the doors were already open, so there was no pointless milling about the foyer and got okay seats (we both admit that we're too old to take up the floor side cushion seating). They also asked everyone walking in if they wanted a picture taken with the set beforehand. I declined. My only hope was that it wasn't going to be just an hour long, which I felt would not justify the admission price. Luckily it was closer to 2 hours, so I'm fine.

It's a collection of 10 short plays with 10 stories that all take place in the bedroom, each play no longer than 15 minutes (?).

1) VIRGIN ON THE RIDICULOUS
Playwright: TERENCE TOH
Director: TERENCE TOH
Cast: Kyle Sui, Leifennie
Genre: Comedy

Bit dumb but funny. The line about keys and locks I think I heard elsewhere, but apt in this instance.

2) RECREATIONAL DAY
Playwright: FA ABDUL
Director: JENNIFER LAI
Cast: Kieran Miles, Aileen
Genre: Drama

Saw the ending a mile away...

3) SQUIGGLES
Playwright: FA ABDUL
Director: MIA SABRINA
Cast: Timmy Ong, Nik Waheeda
Genre: Comedy

The knowing look, wink and sound effect every time a brand name was mentioned cracked me up.

4) TO THE BITTER END
Playwright: FA ABDUL
Director: ANDREW LOH
Cast: Amir Hazril, Kimberly Monteiro
Genre: Drama

This I didn't see the end coming.

5) SITI & DATUK K
Playwright: FA ABDUL & EMMANUEL JOSEPH
Director: EMMANUEL JOSEPH
Cast: Deepan, Lorna Hoong
Genre: Comedy

Datuk had a weird speech impediment where every time he calls "Siti", it comes out "SHITTY" instead. There is a Dato' Siti reference.

6) THE BETRAYAL (Original)
Playwright: FA ABDUL
Director: PING KHOO
Cast: Khaz Shamia, Leanne Chuan
Genre: Drama

I thought the theme referenced to Woody Allen and his recent troubles with the adopted kids...

7) FROM PENANG WITH LOVE
Original Idea: TV Series & Web Advertisement
Re-written by: FA ABDUL
Director: SUDHAN NAIR
Cast: Sharanya Radhakrishnan, Marcus Tan
Genre: Comedy

This cracked me up the most: food-laced phone sex. The guy groaning out Penang dishes in his ecstasy cracked the place up. His pretend jacking off near a section of the audience must've been interesting.

8) WHAT IS YOUR WORTH?
Original Idea: Online Articles
Re-written by: FA ABDUL
Director: SHARANYA RADHAKRISHNAN
Cast: Mia Sabrina, Vijay
Genre: Drama

This was alright.

9) TILL DEATH DO US PART
Original Idea: Web Series
Written by: FA ABDUL, RHETT STEVENS, SUDHAN NAIR, CHRISY WU
Director: RHETT STEVENS
Cast: Chrisy Wu, Sudhan Nair
Genre: Comedy

I had expected a twist ending, and I got it.

10) JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME
Playwright: FA ABDUL
Director: HILDA LOOI
Cast: Morten Christensen, Lai Sien
Genre: Drama

This was the saddest one of all: an interracial, older couple where one died in their sleep.

Creative Director: MATTHEW KOH
Producer: FA ABDUL
Executive Producer: ABDUL FAZRUL
Graphic Designer: SAW SENG LIN
Stage Manager: AMIR KAMYAR

For what it's worth, the comedic ones were really funny and you really felt for the actors in the dramatic ones. Luckily for everyone, the run is also entirely sold out, so even if I told you to go see it, you can't because there are no more tickets.
