Comedy Weekend

Planning on going to 2 comedy shows on two consecutive nights was hoping that you don't fuck yourself over by getting the wrong ticket for the wrong day. Between both the Crackhouse and Upstage Lounge (above the recently opened Kasbah in Bangsar), I would rather go to TTDI on a Friday night than to stress myself out driving through the Jalan Maarof traffic junction on a Friday night. So I got a ticket to see the American based Singaporean headliner Jocelyn Chia on Friday and then the United Nations of Comedy on Saturday night, which sounded like a good idea at the time.

Friday - Headliner: Jocelyn Chia, Crackhouse Comedy Club, TTDI

It was my own dumb fault for not leaving the house earlier when I could've. The parking situation was crap for once and I wished I took a rideshare over instead. It took me so long to find parking that by the time I got upstairs, Rizal had already kicked off the show and they didn't even bother to check if my name was on the list or not. If I wanted to, I could've just confidently strolled in after 9 p.m. without having bought a ticket beforehand, but not nicelah

Anyway, first half of the show were some of the newer comics I had seen the last couple of times I was there: Nicholas Lim (with his Chinese sausage bit), Juliana Heng (whom I'd not seen before; but not bad for few minutes and how she erm, literally picks up men as a lady Grab driver), and a comic from Sarawak who did her set in Malay (which must be fun for the non-locals in attendance). I can't remember if anyone else took the stage. The headliner Jocelyn was pretty hilarious.

Saturday - United Nations of Comedy, Upstage Lounge, Kasbah, Bangsar

Had been meaning to check out the (mostly) expat comedy show for quite a while, but things happened. Finally going this time round. (Just a heads up: If you clicked on "Interested" on the FB event page, Justin Heyes will follow up via PM to see if you still want to go).

Despite having a combined 6 hours of sleep (slept at 1 something, woke up around 5-ish, some nap on the way home and maybe another hour or so of nap late afternoon), I got pretty sweet parking (right downstairs) arriving there before 8 p.m., so I decided to stroll over to the Telawi area which made me pretty sweaty by the time I got back. Had to deal with sharing a table with other pairs (two girl friends and a young couple) practically next to the stage.

No exit stage left here
Before the show, Sam See was seating everyone and served as host during the show, doing crowd work and also introducing the other comics to the stage. When we were told about the power outage the night before, candle princess me was SO glad I wasn't there then.

First half was Bruneian Zainal Bostaman (who joked about the Sultan and how small Brunei is), Nuha from the Maldives (kinda glad to be hearing a slightly different set this time, but that's just me), Aaron Barber (who's as American as it gets; his set was ok), and Dan Tackage the Aussie, who followed his Malaysian ex here, was a little pander-y as to why he stuck around in Malaysia.

Second half was Matt Long (who's based in Bangkok), Sabahan Shahrizan (technically Malaysian, but as far as KL people are concerned, cam expat jugak la; shared his observations on West Malaysians quirks he's noticed), Justin Heyes closed the show with his usual set, which is still funny AF even though I've heard it a few times by now.

Again, if I missed anyone, I apologize - if I didn't wait a couple days to do this, I probably would have better recollection of who was on stage.
