Yep, I got suckered into watching Crazy Rich Asians. Of course I wasn't crazy enough to pay Monday night 2 digit prices, but just saying.
I was scrolling through my old posts to see when and what was the last erm, rom-com I saw in the cinema and it was AADC2. It's been a while. I had heard the hype about the books for years now, but I'll probably never read them now cos I can't be arsed.
- You would think that Rachel would at least give Nick a cursory Google search or something; how she not know he's a scion in 2018 is beyond me.
- How did Harry Shum Jr get such high billing for being in the mid credit sequence for like FIVE seconds? I get that he'll be a bigger part in the sequel (at least), but still.
- All this disapproving mother-in-law drama is why I stopped watching local dramas, let alone TWO generations of disapproving mothers-in-law in this movie.
- Pierre Png, forever typecast as the henpecked husband. But nice view below the neck....?
- Loads of shirtlessness from the guys, which was not bad eye candy. Unless you're into Jimmy O. Yang's dad bod, then... good for you?
- I was wondering why Astrid's marital home/flat had so many maids... until they all scurried to hide her shopping after she said "you know what to do". That was freaking hilarious, but also all too familiar.
- Have to like that Astrid's first move after the husband got out of the car was to bring grandma Young as her plus-one to the wedding.
- If you're not even vaguely familiar with their body of work, most of the Singaporeans in this movie are in the roles they usually are in anyway... especially Fiona Xie. #justsaying But it was nice to see familiar, regional faces in a big budget Hollywood production that's not just erm, Gwendoline Yeo.
- I thought the dress she wore to the wedding looked Marchesa-y... and it was Marchesa.
- With some of the movie being shot in Malaysia, it was fun trying to spot the local socialite cameos. Of course that would involve knowing who they are to start with, but yeah.
- I didn't realise Junji Delfino was one of Astrid's maids in this movie, or that Jerrica Lai was the air stewardess that was in first class. And I also could've sworn that I know that auntie (that was behind Constance Wu in coach during the proposal) from someplace...
For the most part, it's ok for a typical rom-com. I didn't even care for the Nick and Rachel narrative cos cousin Astrid was pretty badass, all things considered.
To everyone who complained that it wasn't like the book... can you please calm your tits? Not everything on the page is worth being on screen. FFS.
