Riding the KTM ETS

The last time I took the interstate train was when I was a kid travelling with my mum, bro and grandma up to Alor Setar to visit my dad when he was posted there (last posting as a civil servant) and she's not one for driving long distances. Third class tickets on the overnight train, I think.

It was Mum's idea to take the train to Butterworth instead of driving or flying, mostly because of the senior citizen discount (my full priced ticket was RM77 one way). It takes about 4 hours 15 minutes from KL Sentral to Butterworth, which is about the same amount of time as driving. And everyone gets to nap, so yay!

Apparently Platinum class means it has fewer stops than the Gold class. From KL Sentral to Butterworth, one takes 4 hours 4 minutes, the other 4 hours 14 minutes.

Boarding at KL Sentral felt a bit cattle call-y - it's like people are rushing to get on despite having assigned seating. I don't even want to imagine what it's like if it was free seating.

The trains are air conditioned (so cold that people are wearing outerwear despite it being hot as balls outside), bathrooms are clean enough if you're desperate, and of course, there's a F&B counter...

You could bring your own snacks/meals, it's not Air Asia. The lasagne was okay. Hot drinks were of the instant variety, so bring your own if you're particular.

If you're able to sleep on trains, good for you; I could only manage cat naps both ways despite bringing a neck pillow along.
