Ronny Chieng - Tone Issues Tour

I got a ticket to the last of Ronny Chieng's "homecoming" shows (he's not been back to perform standup since he started at The Daily Show  about 4 years ago) in Singapore and KL when the KL gigs were first announced because I figured it would sell out quickly. (It did)

Got to TTDI around 8 p.m., found sweet parking across the street, and nursed a headache, a 7-Eleven hot chocolate and egg tart all at the same time (yeah, a tiny ass 7-Eleven opened up since the last time I was there; but the vending machine hot drinks were still cheaper?) and waited for the 7 p.m. audience to clear out, which happened closer to 9 p.m.. Saw a few familiar faces in the crowd too.

Merch: Socks in five colours, and USB drives of his previous specials, all RM20 each. The socks were the typical menswear socks which I don't wear anyway, so pass.

Show started around 9.15 p.m. and Keren Bala Devan opened the show and did about 10 minutes (?), some of which I've heard before but still found funny. As far as opening acts go, I thought he was the appropriate choice (haha). Of course he also took the opportunity to plug his own upcoming hour-long show, which is happening next month.

Ronny did about an hour about topics ranging from his three weddings (in Australia, KL and NY), crazy NY subway shenanigans, baby boomers, Asian parent behaviour...He also did a bit about bloggers/Yelp reviewers which I understand where he's coming from, but we all have a right to our opinions. In case anyone was wondering, he sorta kinda touched on working on TDS, but not really. I know he's been doing this tour for a while now in the States, but I don't know how much of his material stayed the same....?

For the most part, I thought the hour was pretty funny (more than I ever did for some of his old material); so it was a good thing I was seated towards the back (where it's dark AF) and wasn't pressured to laugh out loud.

Show finished before 10.45 p.m.. I practically sprinted out of the place, even though I didn't have to beat traffic or pay parking (haha). Took the time to pump petrol, pam tayar and also get the car washed and vacuumed (yes, at 11 p.m.) before getting home.

NB.
  • The Daily Show is on hiatus this week for Thanksgiving, so my guess is that being a typical Asian, he might as well fly back, do some shows, visit family and eat Malaysian and Singaporean food? I'm just hantam-ing here.
  • Was early enough to get parking across the street, cos bitch, I'm not paying FIVE RINGGIT for parking downstairs.
  • I got a ticket to the 9 p.m. show because I would rather have dinner beforehand than to watch the show hangry at 7 p.m..
