Third movie in the span of one week - Bombshell, which is about the downfall of former FOX News CEO Roger Ailes. Yes, I actually paid money to watch this (cos if you don't, then the movie buyers will just bring in more mainstream movies, etc etc), and the room was probably a third full on a Monday night. Only saw this at second home TGV cos GSC is screening this under their International Screens banner (selected outlets and limited timing) and the screening times there tak ngam for me. And I didn't want to pay through the nose for parking after Starling and Jaya.
There's a bunch of voiceover narrating what's going on, which I thought was handy for those of us not too privy to what went on a few years ago.
- Holy shit, the prosthetic makeup work in this movie...John Lithgow's was done by the same guy whom Gary Oldman persuaded out of retirement to do his Churchill makeup in Darkest Hour. Totally paid off.
- I dunno how much makeup and prosthetic work went into Charlize Theron's Megyn Kelly, but that's not bad either.
- I totally forgot that Malcolm McDowell was in this until the last 15 minutes or so when he finally showed his face as Rupert Murdoch. Yep, that piece of casting makes sense to me.
- I'm glad they got a pair of real life Australian brothers to play the (presumably Australian) Murdoch sons.
- I knew I recognised Grace from The Nanny in this!!!
- I always had the feeling that FOX News was sexist towards the on-air female talent, but yikes, cannot wear pants?! WTF?!
- Because it's rated 18 (even says so when you try to buy tickets on the app), they left some F-bombs in. But not the fellatio reference (according to the parent guide on IMDb, there's one reference).
- You kinda have to cheer for Margot Robbie's character for (presumably) quitting when she left and tossed her badge in the trash on her way out. But I didn't know her character had a last name?
- But you also have to feel a little bad for Kate McKinnon's character who's stuck there as a closeted Democrat lebsian as she can't get a job anywhere else because she works at FOX News (and for Bill O' Reilly, of all people).
There's also a bunch of prologue and epilogue exposition before and after because it's based on real events.
Holy shit, there's so many familiar faces from TV and movies I didn't catch them all (some under makeup and prosthetics, perhaps?). I also finished an entire tube of Mentos watching this. I thought it was entertaining (as did other people in the room, who found some parts damn funny and was LOL-ing). But don't let that stop you from watching if you're so inclined.
