It's been a few years since the cupcake trend emerged out of nowhere (really) and now there are more cupcake businesses in the Valley than I could care to count - shops and stalls, both physically in flea markets and online.
Don't get me started on cupcake cakes, where it's just an tray of at least a dozen mini cupcakes with frosting that spell out the message on top, one letter per cupcake. What the fuck is that about? I might be great for sharing amongst a group of people, but I rather have the cake slice than a tiny shot-sized cupcake.
To make and decorate your own cupcake is one thing - but to pay at least a couple of ringgit for a pretty looking, tiny ass cupcake that you can consume in a couple of bites is one I can't comprehend. Cupcakes can't be savoured like cake slices - it's basically a snack.
Cupcakes with slightly more complicated recipes like Black Forest and Red Velvet I can understand why people would buy them over making it themselves, but why people pay so much for the plain frosted vanilla or chocolate cupcake is beyond me - there are instant cake mixes and the hardware for that :P
Maybe I'm just a little outraged about it because I don't particularly would go out of my way for cupcakes, but seriously... Well okay, I've bought some cupcakes from the shops around just to see what the fuss is about, but I found them to be a bit dry :P
I prefer the bacon fad over the cupcake fad - but I won't really make and eat bacon cupcakes. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer sliced cake over cupcakes, where there's more frosting than just the top.
Mmm, bacon.
