The Creator

The only good thing about a Thursday public holiday is that it's usually when new movies come out (here anyway, can't be certain of elsewhere; but sometimes ahead of US release so there's no Peetimes on the RunPee app if I watch anything first day). As I had no other plans, I decided to catch The Creator, going in cold, on nothing else but the premise (and maybe a couple reviews of it).

The only difference was me going to a different GSC to watch this; I ventured all the way to the recently opened (few months ago?) one in Lalaport, mostly because it's been awhile since I was last there and also, free parking. I had also wanted to use the free popcorn set voucher I got from a Hong Leong staff many, many moons ago, which was also going to expire. It took so long to figure out how to redeem the voucher (I had to ask someone working there to help cos I had never done it before) and collecting said popcorn and drinks (they threw in an extra can of Coke cos some promo), I only made it literally seconds before the movie actually started. At least I didn't have to watch the ads.

Amid a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua, a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife, is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war-and mankind itself.

Apparently, America and it's allies decided to ban A.I. after LA got hit by a nuclear missile, but of course Asia is still all about A.I.
  • Dunno whether to laugh or not when the US Army logos in this movie also sans serif LOL
  • Don't think it's a coincidence that A.I. is made a villain in this, with what went on with the WGA strike (one of the conditions was not wanting A.I. to replace them, which is fair).
  • If I have to guess, there's no chance this movie is gonna make it to China?
  • There's a lot of pew pew pew kinda gun battles
  • If you understand Thai, you might get a kick out of this.
  • After all the other languages spoken in this movie, there's finally a line in Malay LOL
  • The kid very cute, I will admit.
  • WTF guys, heaven is tiān táng, not dian dang
  • Of course it turns out that Gemma Chan's character was Nirmata aka The Creator that everyone was looking for. Is Alphie Josh's bio kid? We'll never know.
This movie won me over when they inserted Radiohead's Everything in its Right Place, even if it's just the first minute or so of the song, right until the lemon sucking. #iykyk

I feel like it's been a damn long time since I last saw a sci-fi movie that's not existing IP, so it's kinda refreshing, in a way, even if the tropes are way too familiar. For how long it was (2 hours, 13 minutes?), it was a relief to be able to just walk out of a movie without having to wait for a stinger. (Apparently according to the director, this is also a one and done, so yay).

It was okay, I guess.

PS.

  • The last movie this director made that I saw was Rogue One (or Star Wars: Episode 3.5, as I called it) which I kinda shat on a little when it came out.
  • NGL, the Lalaport GSC is so pretty I cannot stand it.
